Stay Safe this Gas Safety Week 2024 with West London Gas Ltd

As the autumn chill approaches, West London Gas Ltd is proud to support Gas Safety Week 2024 from 9th–15th September, joining the Gas Safe Register’s campaign to promote the importance of gas safety. This year’s theme, “Checking—Every Check Counts,” emphasises the critical role that regular gas safety checks play in keeping homes and families safe, especially as we enter the colder months and start using our heating systems more frequently.

Why Gas Safety Matters

Unmaintained gas appliances can lead to dangerous problems, including gas leaks, explosions, and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Known as the “silent killer,” CO is undetectable—you can’t see, smell, or taste it. That’s why it’s essential to have your gas appliances inspected regularly by a Gas Safe registered engineer, ensuring your home and loved ones are protected from these hidden dangers.

Jonathan Samuel, CEO of the Gas Safe Register, reminds us:

“This is the fourteenth Gas Safety Week, and we are focusing on the importance of checks. Every check counts when it comes to gas safety. By working together, we can help everyone stay safe this heating season.”

Simple Gas Safety Checks You Can Do at Home

At West London Gas Ltd, we’re committed to helping you stay safe. Here are some easy steps to ensure your home remains gas safe:

Annual Gas Safety Check: It’s important to have your gas appliances inspected by a Gas Safe registered engineer every year. If you’re renting, ensure that your landlord arranges this inspection for you.

Verify Your Engineer’s Registration: Always use a qualified professional. You can verify that your engineer is Gas Safe registered using the Gas Safe Register website or checking their ID card.

Look for Warning Signs: Watch for unusual signs like lazy yellow flames, black marks around appliances, or excess condensation. These could indicate an appliance isn’t working properly.

Clear Vents and Flues: Ensure vents and flues are unobstructed. Blockages can prevent your gas appliances from functioning safely.

Know the Symptoms of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: Be aware that headaches, dizziness, breathlessness, nausea, and loss of consciousness can be signs of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Test Your CO Alarm: Regularly testing your CO alarm can ensure it’s functioning and can alert you to the presence of CO. Ensure your alarm is EN50291 compliant and check the expiry date.

Be Cautious During DIY: Before drilling or hammering, check for the location of gas pipes. Never attempt to fix or service a gas appliance yourself—always call a Gas Safe registered engineer.

The Importance of Regular Checks

With every gas safety check, you’re taking a crucial step in safeguarding your home. It’s easy to forget these checks, but staying on top of them is essential for avoiding hazards. By ensuring your gas appliances are regularly maintained, you protect both your property and your family.
